currently I use RTT in tandem with glympse to publish location to XMPP status manually. It would be grand to have PEP/PubSub location integration with popular XMPP clients such as
GibberBot, http://guardianproject.info/wiki/Always ... _Messaging
Beem
Xabber
Yaxim
But I would be happy if RTT could publish a link and/or current GPS coordinates as status text (presence). I'm confident the Guardian Project people can help with code. The xabber people are responsive, too, however not (yet) Open Source like the other three.

*everyone:
Greatly slash mobile bill by terminating sms and replacing extirely with XMPP for texting: entirely free (not adware), fast, secure (otr), no proprietary client, one Jabber ID for every device logged in simultaneously. Don't be tied to a phone for texting. . Any reputable web hosting company provides xmpp server for your domain: one address as email, jabber id, sip. or pick a public xmpp server.

Both GibberBot and Beem are available from the good-software repository http://F-droid.org . One need NOT have either gapps or Google market access (great especially since Google's market is predominantly predatory "developers"). Android calendar/contacts can be Hotmail powered.

Control is possible not only via SMS but also via the web portal. Have to think about publishing location. To which service would you like to publish? Did you know that you can embed the map into your private homepage?

What made me think of it is because sometimes I may like to publish my tracking map, but not want the general public to know where I live. I know you could just turn on the tracker once you are away from your home location, but it would be nice to be able to just turn on the tracker before leaving and not have to worry about it publishing where you live.

The idea itself makes sense but it's too much effort too create the feature in the short future.

I do not understand how you can control it by using SMS and web portal. Could you please explain it for me.? I am trying to publish the status of my journey while I travel. Using the GPS system is not a suitable option while moving through certain areas where signal strength is low.

You can use the SMS commands and the remote commands in the web portal to remotely start your tracker (and even more). But you will have your phone with you during your jouney, so actually you won't need starting it remotely, right?
